Lloyds Bank has offered “Shariah” bank accounts which adherents to Islam may open without a credit check, and enjoy no fees, no interest charges, and even 0% APR on loans.
Political commentator and activist Luke Nash-Jones responded stating, “Sharia banking has zero interest and no credit checks!! Surely this is religious discrimination against Christians, Buddhists, Sikhs?”
A number of Facebook users have described the banking practice as unfair, prejudiced against many Britons who are charged interest, or must pass credit checks. There is clearly a two-tier system here where the bank treats persons differing according to their religion.
Nash-Jones remarked, “Banks demand I pay interest and made me get a credit check BECAUSE I’M A CHRISTIAN!!! That’s clear bigotry. To use lefty terminology, that’s racist!!”
Lloyds Bank has since closed the service, making the statement: “This account is no longer available. If you already have an Islamic Account, this page will continue to provide you with information about this account.”
